Maruti Suzuki Celerio vs Chevrolet Beat

The launch of Maurti Suzuki Celerio, in February 2014, has added yet another worthy competitor to the highly competitive small car segment in India. One of its main rivals is Chevrolet Beat which was launched in 2010 and received a recent facelift. Though these two city cars bear similarities in terms of pricing and sizes, they come with their own list of merits in terms of styling, fuel efficiency and features.

Style that stands out

Chevrolet Beat is one the best looking car of this segment due to its unique and urban styling. Maruti Suzuki Celerio on the other hand shares many cues with other cars from this car maker and thus, the styling is not an exciting factor of this car.

Chevrolet Beat is an extremely stylish car which comes with leaf shaped automatic headlamps, split front radiator grille with chrome lining, prominent rear spoiler, ORVMs with turn indicator and extremely pleasing body contouring. On the other hand, the front façade of Maruti Suzuki has a wide front grille with chrome slats, swept back headlamps and wide air dam. The rear façade resembles other hatchbacks from Maruti Suzuki with slight modifications.

More power to you

Maruti Suzuki Celerio is powered by a refined 1.0L K-series petrol engine that yields maximum power of 67bhp and peak torque of 90Nm. This engine is mated with a 5-speed manual transmission gearbox and also gets the first in segment automated manual transmission called Maruti Suzuki’s E-Drive. It combines manual transmission with an automatic clutch.

Chevrolet Beat houses a slightly powerful engine than Maruti Suzuki Celerio. The 1.2L, 16V Smartech petrol engine of Chevrolet Beat churns out maximum power of 79.4bhp and maximum torque of 108Nm. This engine comes with a 5-speed manual transmission option only. This hatchback is also available in diesel variant with 1.0L, 3-cylinder TCIC engine that gives peak power of 57.6bhp and torque of 150Nm.

In the power section, Maruti Suzuki Celerio has an edge with the E-Drive technology whereas Chevrolet Beat scores with its more powerful engine and fuel efficient diesel option.

Cost matters

Maruti Suzuki has created a reputation for churning out cost effective cars that are high on mileage, aptly priced and deliver good resale value.  Maruti Suzuki Celerio is a clear winner when it comes to costs. The mileage delivered by the petrol engine of Maruti Suzuki Celerio is 22kmpl with manual transmission and 23.1kmpl with automated manual transmission. The petrol variant of Chevrolet Beat is less frugal and gives average mileage of 18.6kmpl. The diesel variant on the other hand gives a brilliant 25.44kmpl. Looking at just the petrol variants, Maruti Suzuki Celerio clearly leaves Chevrolet Beat behind.

If fuel economy is a prime concern while choosing a car then Maurti Suzuki Celerio is the perfect choice but if not, then Chevrolet Beat is the better car amongst the two. It has better styling, interior quality and more powerful engines.
