Day 189
Snake River Conspiracy – Lovesong

To start with, how interesting is it that the guy part of this band (which is one dude and one girl), Jason Slater, used to be in Third Eye Blind? I mean, really.

Rumor has it SRC has been trying to make another album for the last nine years but it hasn’t ever gotten anywhere. That’s OK, because I consider Sonic Jihad the symptom of an era of music that I am glad that has passed.

Who remembers turning on Total Request Live and being over-saturated with Marilyn Manson and Orgy? Who doesn’t miss that at all? I sure as shit don’t. I don’t miss the Godheads of the world no longer being signed to or constructed by major labels. Orgy themselves were the clearest symptoms of the sickness, of the brief period in which pseudo-”industrial rock” found itself in the spot light (with Nine Inch Nails almost nowhere to be seen due to The Fragile’s comparitively mellow vibe) and everyone was trying to cash in. (Even David Bowie tried, a couple years way too early, with 1. Outside.)

I remember reading that this band was fully constructed by a label in an attempt to cash in. Was that true? I don’t know. It’s not like I can find back up of that fact, but something remains clear:

These guys rock! I love the singer. She’s got that kind of voice where you just want to shove your cock down her throat because she sounds so hot, if you know what I mean. They also have a great gift for making awesome covers, meaning, of course, this Cure cover takes what is a fucking obnoxious song (seriously, if you don’t want to vomit every time you hear Cure’s original, then I dunno who you are) and turns it into a ridiculously loud and amazing sounding industrial whatever the fuck. At the bottom end of the album they cover How Soon Is Now? and do it in a more traditional way but with the same swoopy sort of industrial motif. On the Vulcan single, which I’ve unfortunately not found in MP3 in years (need to look), they cover She Said, She Said by The Beatles and it’s marvelous.

In short, I’m glad that the “industrial rock popularity era” is over, but I’m also glad that we’ve got all these great sounding fossils.

There were titties and strippers in the video for their song Vulcan. Hooray for boobies!

  • Myke
Yeah, that Cure album is on my "to buy" list too. My fav. cover of this song is Jack Off Jill.
  • 21hrs later, and I've sourced a copy of "Sonic Jihad." Outstanding.

Gratuitously enjoying the 007 vibe in "Strangled," sprinkles of Star Trek in "Vulcan," the strings in "Casualty," the aforementioned "Lovesong," and the cheery dose of sunshine called "Somebody Hates You."

    Very listenable disc for sure.
  • If you find the Vulcan single with the cover of "She Said, She Said"
you should email said cover to me.
  • "A ridiculously loud and amazing sounding industrial whatever the fuck."

Started this track, walked out of the room to find another keyboard, had to come back in, because, well, what the fuck? In a word, awesome.

    EDIT:

Shit. That's the first time I've ever listened to The Cure's "Lovesong" both all the way through and multiple times in a row. Gonna have to explore this album and consider a purchase.
