The Earlies are long distance internet collaborators, half of the four person troupe lives in Texas and the other is in England. Apparently their live shows are supposed to be quite impressive with 11 different people all playing instruments (The Polyphonic Spree scoffs at them from a distance). While it’s not as apparent on this song, I want to say that it’s pretty rad how organic their music sounds for being crafted long distance and in a patch-work method. The songs sound natural, not at all muddled by their production. Nifty.
This is one of those songs that gets positive comments from people unexpectedly all the time. I like the song, obviously, I am posting it here, I think it is awesome, but apparently everyone else does, too. It also reminds me a lot of their other song, which is posted a little below.
Most people complain about songs that are repetitive and sort of monotonous, (there are sections of Bodies of Water‘s songs that have caused people in the car with me to shout out “oh my god! please make it stop!”) but this song has such a groove about it, mostly due to the somewhat intense vocal (with lyrics that make sense until you read them all written down in a row).
The build at the very end is just the cherry on top.
To be honest, these are the only two Earlies songs you will see on this site. I’m not really a fan of either of their albums, though both of these songs are quite excellent. I can’t tell you why, whether their albums sucked or not (I remember enjoying this one for quite a while), so I think I should sit down one of these days and re-explore The Earlies.
I used to listen to this song and just rock out to it. For some reason I could relate to it: it’s almost venomous, spitting the chorus in the face of someone who is a totally worthless dick (or, more likely, bitch) who, well, doesn’t listen to anybody. I’ve always thought (and no one at Songmeanings has thought anything really) this song is just about telling off people who hold you down. Do the lyrics hold up that theory? I don’t know? It’s the the tone of the song, man. It’s a mental stomping going on here.
Stomp, stomp, stomp.
