Sometimes if I read too much about something in the pursuit of looking for something to write about it, I end up not wanting to say anything at all. I feel that way, now, with this music. I, myself, am not a fan of Björk. It might be just because of how American I am but anytime anyone sings in broken or badly pronounced English it just makes me feel like, damn, I’m listening to a retarded person sing. This means that, yes, I have a bit of a problem with Blonde Redhead and would rather die than listen to j-pop.
Luckily on “Sharing Orb” Björk’s deaf girl vocal seems to add a little emphasis, especially during the chorus which just makes me think of that musical movie she did that I never saw, and I get this image of her running toward the camera in some abstract red dress, with her arms bursting outward like her chest just exploded with love or something. Yes, perhaps there is another kind of light.
But my favorite track is clearly “Beautiful Mother”. On it, the ladies of the Dirty Projectors stretch their vocal gymnastics to incredible degrees, and I admit that if I hadn’t seen the Dirties myself (all us kids in the know just call them “the dirties”) I wouldn’t have believed this sort of thing could be pulled off anywhere but a studio, but I tell you this: these ladies can sing. See, I even called them ladies. I could have gone for the edgy “These bitches can sing!” but I’m not black or gay so apparently it’s just not cool if I call women bitches. Anyway, point is, if you heard them play this live it would sound like it does on this recording, and that shit is rad.
